Railroad Administration Announces Automated Braking System

Positive Train Control installed ahead of statutory deadline.

Administrator Ronald Batory of the Federal Railroad Administration announced the installation of the Positive Train Control (PTC) system, an automatic braking system, ahead of the federal deadline set by Congress. The system is now operational on on 57,536 railroad miles for passenger and freight cars.

The Department of Transportation describes the PTC system as “designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, over-speed derailments, incursions into established work zones, and movements of trains through switches left in the wrong position.“

Administrator Batory said of the accomplishment, “PTC is a critical piece and new dimension of safety in the railroad industry, but it does not take the place of the men and women who operate and maintain freight and passenger trains.  At its core, PTC is a risk reduction system that will make a safe industry even safer, and provide a solid foundation upon which additional safety improvements will be realized.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • That the automated braking system would be effective in saving lives and preventing collisions on railways.
  • For Administrator Batory as he oversees the Federal Railroad Administration.
  • For the Department of Transportation as they seek to increase the safety of Americans’ conveyance around the nation.
